Friendly
and hospitable, the city of Cusco is a cosmopolitan city that
has managed to combine wisely the momentum of modernity with its
mystical past millennium, which has led her to give foreign
visitors an energy aura rarely seen. Tahuantinsuyo was the
capital of a holy city and government center of the four large
regions of the vast Inca Empire which extended to include much
of the current territory of Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia,
Argentina and Chile. Holds the titles of "Archaeological Capital
of America" and "Cultural Heritage of Humanity", besides being
the "Historical Capital of Peru."
Some historians claim that in the first centuries of its
existence, his name was Akamama, which means "Mother of Chicha"
(chicha = a type of fermented corn beer). Now as the capital of
Tawantinsuyo, Cusco was called, which comes from the Quechua
word Qosqo, in Spanish "navel" or "center." That is why the Inca
Garcilaso de la Vega described it as the "center or navel of the
world."
After the Spanish conquest in 1533, the name was transformed
into Cuzco, a derogatory meaning "hypocrite", "humpback" and
"small dog" in an attempt to minimize or satirize the importance
of the city.
However, late twentieth century an important social movement
fought to keep the original name of this ancient city, and the
June 20, 1990, was officially established on behalf of Cuzco.
Cusco is a territory of meetings that served as support for the
development of important cultures as the Inca. But it is also a
kind of geographical hinge, a door between the mountain range,
the Amazon rainforest and the vast Andean Plateau. Hence its
ecological diversity and contrast of its landscapes. Its high
mountains are combined with high plateaus, rolling plains, deep
valleys and plains of the Amazon.
While it has all the services to fully meet the demands of the
huge influx of tourists who visit in the provinces and around
the supply decreases, so we recommend all the necessary supplies
in the capital of the department.
Cuzco remains an important regional center. But not only is
great for its archaeological monuments, but by the wealth of
their land and its people. |
